Female Veterans Book

This is a collaboration between Warrior Writers & Women Veterans Center in Philadelphia Description: You must participate in at least two workshops at the Women Veterans Center in Philadelphia in order to have your work considered for publication. Our final workshop was Thursday, September 22.

We are looking for original artwork by female veterans of any era and branch. We are accepting creative writing of any genre and visual art of all kinds. They can be stories of how you got into the military, treatment of females in your unit, deployments, women in military leadership, how VA and hospital services are for female medical issues, love, women in combat, women re-integrating back into family/motherhood, anything. But they will all in some way illustrate the nature of what it is to be a female veteran in this country. The anthology will be printed and available by Veterans Day 2016. We have decided not to choose a topic or theme at this stage, but to keep it open for now because we want to see what we have to work with and go from there. Artists will be compensated for their works by receiving a copy of the book.

Length, Size, File type: Submissions should be less than 700 words and in Times New Roman font, 12 point. Writing submissions must be Microsoft Word documents. Visual art submissions should be 300 dpi for print. Your submissions must be attached as .doc, .rtf, .pdf, or .jpg file.

Quantity of Submissions: We will accept up to two submissions from one individual.

Collaborative Submissions: You can submit work that is a collaboration between you and any other artist. This type of submission will count toward one of your two.

Publication of your work: Submission does not guarantee publication. The editors will decide what gets published based on quality of the artwork, as well as content.

Previous publication: Your submissions can be previously published or not, but we are not accepting anything that has already been published in a Warrior Writers anthology. Proof of service: You will be required to submit some form of proof of service such as DD214, orders, military/veteran ID, etc. You can get it copied by staff members at the WVC, or email a copy to info@warriorwriters.org. Be sure to black out personal information, such as SS#.

Editing: (this relates only to writing submissions)
In order to increase collaboration and quality, we are implementing an editing process. You must submit your writing to be edited by one of our volunteers. You are also strongly encouraged to work with your peers (folks attending the workshop and outside of it) to get feedback and suggestions for edits. Once you have submitted it to us we will send it to folks to get feedback and then they will communicate with you directly, with suggestions on how to improve your writing. You will have two weeks to re-submit your final versions.

Submission Process: The submission process involves a few steps.
1. When you have your writing prepared, email it to info@warriorwriters.org with “Submission to Edit” in the subject line. On the top of the first page, include the following: Name, genre (poem, prose, fiction, etc.), title of piece and email address. You also need to include a biography statement, 100 words or less. Your writing must be in one Microsoft Word document, with your name as the title followed by edit. For example: JaneDoeEdit
2. We will send it to an editor who will read it and email you their comments/feedback along with their contact info, should you have further questions. We encourage you to work with the artists around you to get their feedback as well. 3. Then you will incorporate the feedback and edit your piece. 4. Email your final, edited submissions (up to 2) to info@warriorwriters.org with “Final Submission” as the subject, with the document titled name-Final: JaneDoeFinal. Visual art submissions need only follow step #4, along with contact info.
